The good news is I am oh so close to announcing publication. Woohoo! 
But…unfortunately, the delay is more about Amazon getting pages linked and creating “Look Inside” features, etc. than the publication itself. Nothing more is required of me as they work out a few kinks. Amazon informs me one issue can take a few days, another may be longer. Frustrating but out of my hands. However, I will say that service with both KDP and CreateSpace has been fair. They are responsive and do their best for your book.
I have also submitted A Guilty Mind to Smashwords and their premium catalog for B&N, Kobo, Sony, Apple, etc. (it’s been accepted but again, it takes several days to appear). This was really a no-brainer decision for me as I have many friends who have Nooks and not Kindles. What surprises me is how many books I’ve seen on Amazon that are available for the Kindle but I can’t find on B&N. This doesn’t make sense to me. Yes, Smashwords is additional work, meeting their requirements, etc. but doesn’t everyone have friends with Ipads and Nooks, too? Wouldn’t you want your book in as many formats as possible? Same goes for the decision on whether or not to publish in digital form only. Doesn’t your mother want a copy (or ten or twenty) she can look at and hold? I understand that publishing outside the traditional method with a big publisher means either money to pay for editors, formatting, and book covers or a whole lot of headaches to do it yourself. But if your goal is to publish, don’t you want to do it right? I love Amazon for their smart business, for the opportunities they give writers, and for their huge marketing machine. But they are not the only booksellers out there – it only seems like it. So, why wouldn’t you publish through all possible outlets?
